Infrastructure for a global leader

Red Mesa’s ambitious goals are already taking shape

Irvine, CA – January 18, 2022 – RotaChrom Technologies NA announced the launch of its long-term strategic partnership with leading cannabinoid manufacturer Red Mesa Science & Refining.

The companies will start by working on methods development, sharing, and perfecting their existing methodologies. Their first goal is creating new and profitable operations using RotaChrom’s centrifugal chromatography solution. In addition, they’ll begin developing processes for other compounds of interest which are essential to the evolving cannabinoid-related industries.

RotaChrom's CPC machine now displayed in Red Mesa's facility

Besides the research partnership, Red Mesa’s facility is now involved in displaying RotaChrom’s flagship technology. The site will showcase the company’s full-size Centrifugal Partition Chromatography (CPC) platform, the pCPC. Potential customers and partners can see the machinery in action or ask questions about it and understand how to build and run a complete system tailored to their needs. The scalable CPC system includes a pilot-sized rCPC and a preparative sized iCPC and uses RotaChrom’s superior chromatography method, in which separation occurs between two immiscible liquid phases. This creates a more purified botanical extract, and reduces the necessary input, steps, human capital, and operational costs. In addition, the platform creates significantly less environmental impact compared to traditional chromatography and purification solutions. Since RotaChrom’s method uses two liquid phases, no solid-state waste occurs, and solvents can be recycled up to 95%.

László Madarász, CEO of RotaChrome said “we are honored to work with a high caliber company such as Red Mesa, whose focus is on leading the space in terms of quality, consistent reliability, and innovation, to highlight how our technology can position operators for success in the industry”. He mentioned how “most processors working in the botanical extract space understand the value of chromatography for purification. However, until now, most industrial-size applications had drawbacks such as scalability, solvent consumption, and automation.” RotaChrom’s platform is the first of its kind available at an industrial scale. It offers companies in the botanical extract market a revolutionary solution.

Infrastructure for a global leader

More than 60 employees, including engineers, chemists, researchers, and renowned operators work in Red Mesa’s facility in St. George, Utah, under the management of many seasoned business professionals. The site is 50,000 square feet in size, built upon ISO9001:2015 quality management principles, adhering to cGMP. The facility suits extraction, distillation, crystallization, and chromatography. This creates an integrated infrastructure for processing industrial-scale premium CBD and other legal cannabinoid raw materials for exclusive distribution to the B2B sector.

Jeff Applegate, president of Red Mesa said they “set out to be the global leader in cannabinoid processing”. The company wants to use science and innovation to create a unique integrated model for refining cannabis-derived ingredients. “In deciding to move ahead with the RotaChrom pCPC System, the refinement and purity of higher value minors at scale and the ability to operate our processes consistently under the highest quality standards was paramount. Our focus was to secure a relationship with a partner that best complimented our team of talented chemists and researchers. With this view, we were confident that we had selected the best candidate in the field,” he added.

Red Mesa's ambitious goals are already taking shape

Red Mesa plans to use RotaChrom’s CPC Technology Platform to keep innovating and refining their processes, which supply custom product blends to meet the needs of large-scale product formulators besides commodity products. They already achieved this with the first known production methods to refine CBT and CBE at scale using RotaChrom’s system. These new developments by the technology and product development team help to reinforce the story unfolding at Red Mesa’s facility.

Danton Brown, Director of Technology & Engineering explained “our goal to lead the industry in terms of setting the production processing standards and product purity is the core of our founding principles. On top of that fundamental belief is our intense desire to be creative with our research and process development as we expand the production gates of operation”. He added how “the breakthrough made with CBT and CBE is just the beginning of a long runway for the refining of new minors and custom blends”.
